PICASSO,
the Master of Modern Art

IMAGINE PICASSO PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE GENIUS AND THE FREEDOM OF PICASSO’S CREATION

“I think this exhibition would have pleased my grandfather a lot because he was, above all, a man of freedom.”

Olivier Widmaier Picasso, grandson of Pablo Picasso about the Imagine Picasso exhibition

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) embodies the Master of Modern Art: constantly reinventing himself, Picasso revolutionized the forms and the academic aesthetics through several art mediums. An impressive 78-year career of the most prolific creative genius of all-times: he produced an average of 120,000 artworks – including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics.
Eminently notorious, Picasso is more than a household name in the West, he is the only artist whose name became a world-widely famous brand.

PICASSO, A PIONEER IN THE PROJECTION OF HIS OWN WORK

Picasso himself would have been intrigued by this new type of vision and way of showing his works. As his biographer Pierre Cabanne said, Picasso authorised the audiovisual projection of his paintings in 1971 in Les Halles Baltard: “A remarkable show in which the works of Picasso were shown one after the other on 10 screens in a semi-circle to a captivated audience. Children were delighted and showed their joy at this wild and bizarre kaleidoscope… The technique used at Les Halles allows us to see at a glance the antagonistic and com¬plementary aspects of the same object; it is quite simply the process of Cubism in motion (…) Picasso’s broken-up style took on epic dimensions on the screens of Les Halles.” (Pierre Cabanne, in Le siècle de Picasso)

Experience Picasso
in Image Totale©

Image Totale©, an innovation inherited from Annabelle Mauger and Julien Baron, dates back to the 1970s in France. It came to life in the gigantic abandoned quarries of Les Baux-de-Provence. It was here, in 1977, that the man of images Albert Plécy created his Cathédrale d’Images.
This artistic and technological conception is rooted in a know-how designed to plunge the viewer into the heart of the image. With Imagine Picasso, Annabelle Mauger and Julien Baron are guided by a conviction: the experience they propose must establish a direct, raw relationship between the work and the viewer. Thanks to Image Totale©, viewers are completely immersed in a world of images, with total freedom to wander and explore their surroundings.

Imagine Picasso invites visitors to literally immerse themselves in the world and work of Picasso.
